What Does it Mean to Empower People?

S and C Electric Company’s Chief Human Resources Officer, Nicole Colen, presents the S&C Empowering People Award to Sacramento Municipal Utility District

At S&C, we believe that people are the driving force behind innovation, progress, and a reliable and resilient energy future. That’s why our stated purpose of “Empowering People to Transform the Grid” is so meaningful. Transforming the grid doesn’t happen without attracting and keeping the best people. They are the heart of our company and the future of our industry.

Grounded in our purpose of Empowering People to Transform the Grid and guided by our core value of Respect for People, we are proud to introduce the S&C Empowering People Award, an expansion of the Powered by Diversity Award. The S&C Empowering People Award honors utilities that show leadership in empowering people through three distinct pillars: workforce expansion, talent development, and community engagement.

When you’re attracting new team members, helping current team members learn and grow, or connecting with the communities you serve, you are putting people at center of your organization. Last year’s award recipient, Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), exemplifies this vision. As Jose Bodipo-Memba, Chief Diversity Officer at SMUD, shared:

“We were truly honored to receive the S&C Empowering People Award — recognition that highlights the meaningful impact of our Community Impact Plan, Sustainable Communities Resource Priorities Map, regional workforce programs, and customer-focused initiatives. By ensuring our programs reach and serve all communities and by empowering a wide range of perspectives within our workforce, we are strengthening the foundation of SMUD’s 2030 Clean Energy Vision. When people feel valued and supported, innovation thrives — and that is how we build a cleaner, more resilient future for everyone.”

This is the spirit we aim to celebrate. The S&C Empowering People Award is not just about recognition; it’s about amplifying stories and strategies that can inspire others to take similar action.

If your organization is committed to empowering people through workforce expansion, talent development, or community engagement, we encourage you to apply. Share your story and show the industry how you’re making a difference.
