Challenge:  

  • Alabama Power’s storm-prone service area and fuse-protected lines meant frequent outages and reliability issues 

Solution: 

  • Trial of 20 S&C TripSaver® II Cutout-Mounted Reclosers
  • Development of Grid Inform, a suite of tools that analyzes data and identifies the most advantageous placement of lateral-protection investment

    Results: 

    • Expanded trial of 100 devices, leading to: 
      • 70% SAIFI improvement 
      • 57% SAIDI improvement 
      • Household sustained outages reduced from two-plus per year to once every three years 
    • Widescale deployment of more than 4,000 TripSaver II reclosers, leading to: 
      • 6,000 outages eliminated annually 
    The data have shown how these [TripSaver II] reclosers have quickly improved our system for our customers while also providing incredible O&M savings. We believe they are now a core part of our grid-modernization plans.
