Every organization that invests in innovation faces the same question: how do we turn ideas into products that create real-world value?

That challenge has become even more pressing as the electric power industry responds to rising electricity demand, aging infrastructure, electrification, and higher expectations for reliable energy delivery. Technology has the potential to transform how we generate, transmit, distribute, and manage electricity, but only if breakthroughs are translated from lab environments to the field.

That journey is rarely straightforward.

Organizations approach innovation from diverse perspectives. National laboratories and universities push the boundaries of scientific discovery. Manufacturers apply engineering expertise to adapt said discoveries into new technologies suited for industrial use. Customers validate these technologies by deploying them in real-world operating environments.

Each contributes something essential. The most successful innovations don’t happen within a single organization. They emerge when distinct kinds of expertise converge.

At S&C, we’ve always believed that innovation starts with solving meaningful problems. For more than a century, we’ve developed technologies that address real-world challenges of electrical grids by combining engineering expertise with a deep understanding of our customers’ challenges.

Building on this legacy of innovation and realizing that we are living in an age of specialization, it is helpful to review and adjust how we conduct research and development. Especially, how do we ensure we’re exploring the technologies that will matter five, ten, or even twenty years from now?

One of the realities of industrial research and development is that we’re naturally drawn to technologies that are closer to commercial readiness. That’s where manufacturers create value—engineering products, validating performance, scaling production, and ultimately delivering solutions customers can trust.

Yet many of tomorrow’s breakthrough technologies are still in much earlier stages of discovery. They’re promising but not yet proven. They require deeper exploration before they’re ready for engineering development, manufacturing, and commercialization.

That’s where collaborative innovation becomes so valuable.

Organizations like Argonne National Laboratory bring world-class expertise in scientific research and technology discovery. They explore ideas that may eventually reshape industries but still require significant translational effort and validation before they’re ready for commercial application.

Engineering and manufacturing organizations like S&C bring a unique perspective. We understand what it takes to transform promising research advances into technologies that can be manufactured at scale, perform reliably in demanding environments, and solve meaningful challenges for our customers.

That’s why I’m excited about S&C’s expanded collaboration with Argonne through our new umbrella Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA). Rather than focusing on a single project, the agreement establishes a framework for exploring multiple areas of mutual interest—from advanced materials for modern electrical power hardware that will boost the reliability and resilience of the evolving grid, to other emerging technologies that can shape the future of the electric power industry.

Our ongoing work through the Department of Energy’s Transformer Resilience and Advanced Components (TRAC) program illustrates that approach. By combining Argonne’s expertise in advanced ceramic-polymer insulation materials with S&C’s industrial research capabilities, we’re exploring technologies that could improve equipment durability and performance under increasingly demanding operating conditions.

Just as importantly, we’re learning from one another.

Scientists, engineers, manufacturers, and end users often view the same challenge through different lenses. Bringing those perspectives together accelerates research and leads to better questions, better solutions, and ultimately greater impact.

The challenges facing the electric power industry will continue to evolve, and so must the way we innovate.

In this current age of specialization, no single organization will have all the answers. But by connecting scientific discovery with engineering expertise and real-world application, we can accelerate the journey from promising ideas to technologies that modernize and strengthen our electric power systems.

Innovation doesn’t end with discovery. That’s where the practical work begins.
