S&C Selected as Partner in Smart Grid Coalition

San Diego Gas & Electric, University of California San Diego, and CleanTECH San Diego announced that S&C Electric Company has been included in a coalition of 25 local, national, and global organizations that will transform the region’s electrical grid into a digital smart grid. The coalition’s goals include creation of a community-scale utility system promoting greater use of renewable generation at both the distribution- and transmission-voltage levels, storage of renewable energy, and use of automated sensors and communication technologies to help manage renewable energy resources. The coalition will also focus on means for accommodating the growing number of electric vehicles, and the application of advanced technology allowing customers to exert greater control over their energy usage. If successful, the prototype project could be recreated on a larger scale anywhere in the world.

S&C, a pioneer in the area of distribution automation, will share its expertise in Smart Grid solutions with the coalition. S&C offers a wide variety of overhead and underground switching and fault-interrupting devices for implementing the Smart Grid, including the unique IntelliTEAM II® Automatic Restoration System. It’s the only system that provides self-healing, scalable, distributed-intelligence-based fault isolation and circuit reconfiguration. Other manufacturers’ equipment can be integrated into IntelliTEAM II too. S&C’s Smart Grid SMS™ Storage Management System allows better utilization of renewable energy; as power generated off-peak can be used during periods of peak usage. The Smart Grid SMS also extends the life of existing equipment, improves asset management, and can defer or eliminate the need for additional generation. S&C’s team of automation, system planning, and engineering experts is available for assistance with services for optimizing Smart Grid solutions.
