The population of the twin cities of Bloomington-Normal, Illinois is expected to double by 2040. To accommodate this growth, a new water reclamation plant was constructed. Covering 12 acres, the facility is comprised of seven buildings that are designed to blend into the landscape, plus 60 acres of wetlands and restored native prairie.

Plant processes include screening, secondary clarifying, aeration, bacterial enhancement, and ultraviolet disinfection. The effluent is continuously tested to ensure that it meets federal and state water quality standards. The wetlands provide added filtering of the effluent and are a habitat for birds and other wildlife.

New switchgear was needed for the processing equipment. Corn Belt Energy, the serving utility, turned to S&C to provide this switchgear.

S&C PMX Modular Metal-Enclosed Switchgear with source-transfer and remote supervisory capabilities was specified for the service entrance. In addition to its low cost and compact size, PMX Switchgear was selected because it could accommodate voltage transformers, which are needed to permit synchronizing of the new 2-MW diesel generator that will be used for peak shaving for the plant’s 2-MW backup diesel generator.

The PMX Switchgear will automatically transfer plant load to the generator if utility power is lost. The generator is also used for peak shaving. In exchange for a lower electric rate for the plant, Corn Belt Energy can remotely start the generator from their SCADA system during peak usage periods, and operate switches in the PMX Switchgear to transfer some of their distribution system load to the generator.

The PMX Switchgear serves three units of S&C PMH Pad-Mounted Gear, which provide power to the seven buildings. In an emergency, the PMX Switchgear can be bypassed and the facilities served directly through the pad-mounted gear.

The PMX Switchgear and the PMH Pad-Mounted Gear continue to provide excellent performance.
