Paper: NaS-Based Distributed Energy Storage System to Improve Electric Service Reliability at AEP.

S&C Application Director Automation Systems — Dave Kearns and AEP Principal Engineer — Tom Weaver will be presenting a paper entitled “NaS-Based Distributed Energy Storage System to Improve Electric Service Reliability at AEP” at the upcoming Planning and Implementation of the Smart Grid for Electric Utilities Conference, to be held May 5–6, 2008 in Dallas, TX.

Abstract:
American Electric Power is deploying a NaS-Battery Distributed Energy Storage Systems (DESS) on radially fed distribution feeders for peak shaving, to mitigate overloads on existing substations, and to temporarily serve distribution customers during periods when a permanent fault upstream of the DESS islands the battery. This effort follows the successful use of a NaS battery at an industrial facility exclusively for peak shaving, allowing the deferral of a new distribution station for several years.

The initial application of technology to dynamically island a DESS — to minimize customer minutes of service interruptions — will be installed in the summer of 2008, on a 34.5-kV, 30-mile-long radial feeder serving primarily rural loads in West Virginia. The presentation will discuss the capabilities of the NaS battery, as well as how the island of customers will be established, maintained, and subsequently abandoned (once the fault is repaired, or battery capacity is depleted before the fault is repaired).
