Distribution automation is increasingly being applied to improve the performance of utility distribution systems. Examples of DA initiatives include automated switching of poletop capacitor banks, remote meter reading, and remote control of switching or sectionalizing devices.

Many of these initiatives include communications and centralized or decentralized intelligence. But for distribution feeders, automatic reconfiguration is the key to achieving significant reliability improvements.
