S&C Plays Key Role in Construction of Ontario Wind Farm
S&C Electric Company played a significant role in the construction of the Prince I and Prince II wind farm projects in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Prince I is a 99-MW wind farm consisting of 66 GE 1.5-MW turbines, a 34.5-kV underground collector system, a 34.5/240kV interconnect substation, and 11 kilometers of 240-kV transmission line that ties the interconnect substation back to the switching substation and then to the 240-kV transmission line. Phase 1 involved completion of all items enclosed in yellow.
Prince II is a 90 MW wind farm consisting of 60 GE 1.5-MW turbines, a 34.5-kV underground and overhead collector system, and a 34.5/240kV interconnect substation which ties into the 11-km, 230-kV transmission line. Phase 2 involved completion of all items enclosed in green.

For Prince I and Prince II, S&C operated under an EPC contract with Mortenson Canada Ltd. for the wind farm collector systems, and Brookfield Power for the interconnect substations, switching substation, and transmission line. S&C provided engineering and design services including:
- Single-line diagrams, civil/structural drawings, and equipment specifications.
- Equipment procurement including S&C Circuit-Switchers, circuit-breakers, disconnect switches, main transformer (GSU), grounding transformers, and capacitor banks.
- Site management including construction over-site, testing, and commissioning.
- Project management.
The project proceeded at a rapid pace. Engineering commenced in late 2005 with construction of Phase 1 commencing in March 2006. The Phase 1 switching substation was completed by July, and the collector system, interconnect substation, and transmission line were completed by August. Construction for Phase 2 commenced in June, and both the collector system and interconnect substation were completed by October. Currently the project is in its final stages, with both farms energized and sending electricity to the transmission grid.
