S&C Supports Career Education and Continuing Skills Training.

Gene Cottini, S&C’s Manager—Training & Development Services, was asked how many unskilled jobs were available at the company. His reply: “There are no unskilled jobs at S&C.” This telling comment was part of an interview conducted at S&C’s headquarters as part of a report on “Schools, Skills, and Jobs” broadcast in late September on WBEZ, Chicago’s National Public Radio affiliate. The career education report, which included live coverage of an on-premises shop math class taught by an S&C employee, focused on the company’s extensive training efforts aimed at ensuring that all employees have the skills needed to compete in today’s high-tech, global economy.

It’s no surprise that the public radio station selected S&C as one of the employers in the forefront of training and career development. Each year, hundreds of S&C employees take advantage of an array of in-house training programs, from shop math and blueprint reading to metallurgy; most in-house courses are taught by employee volunteers. Many other S&Cers take company-reimbursed courses off-premises. S&C also supports on-premises English as a Second Language classes for employees and has developed an innovative Vocational English as a Second Language program.

In short, the company is committed to creating an environment where its employees can succeed so that they, in turn, can help customers achieve success.
