Maker of Lens Cleaning Solution Clearly Sees Advantages of
PureWave UPS™ System.
Background
A maker of lens cleaning solution, located near Toronto, Ontario, has a strictly controlled manufacturing process which requires a clean room environment. Motor-driven blowers are used to maintain positive air pressure in the clean rooms.
Their facilities were experiencing a dozen or so power disturbances annually that adversely affected production. Even slight voltage sags caused the blower motor contactors to drop out, stopping the motors.
When positive air pressure in the clean rooms is lost, production must be shut down for up to 24 hours to clean and sterilize the bottling equipment. Revenue is significantly impacted. The maker estimated the cost of a business interruption to be up to $80,000 per hour.
What did they do?
Recognizing that the electric utility serving their facilities cannot prevent all power disruptions, the maker decided to solve their power quality problem themselves. They sought a system that could protect the manufacturing operation including the blower motors.
Both a flywheel UPS and an S&C PureWave UPS System were considered. The PureWave UPS System was deemed to be the best solution for several reasons:
- The PureWave UPS System has an efficiency exceeding 98%,resulting in the lowest energy cost of any UPS.
- The PureWave UPS System features a NEMA-3R enclosure, permitting installation outdoors. Since the maker had no indoor space available, a costly new building would have been required to house the flywheel UPS.
- The purchase and installation costs of the PureWave UPS System were significantly lower than that of the flywheel UPS.
Results
The PureWave UPS System paid for itself after the first few times it protected the manufacturing process from power disturbances. And it will continue to add to the bottom line by keeping production flowing.
