New Control Software for S&C 5800 Series Automatic Switch Controls.

S&C is pleased to announce the release of revision 2.38 of control software for the S&C 5800 Series Automatic Switch Controls (without IntelliTEAM® II). The new software offers significant enhancements over previous revisions, including dead-banding and the new “harmonic smoothing” algorithm.

Two updated versions of software were released on January 13, 2005:

  • SNCD2S0X Rev. 2.38 — For 5801 or 2851 and overhead switches, DNP Protocol.
  • PADD2S0X Rev. 2.38 – For 5802, 5803 or 2852 and Pad-Mounted Gear, DNP Protocol.

Dead Banding of Analog Signal Reporting

Dead banding allows users to monitor the deviation of selected analog parameters and reduces the communication traffic on SCADA systems.

Analog parameters such as voltage, current, and kVARs can be assigned a dead-band value. The dead-band value can be either a percentage of the present reference value or high/low set points. Periodic measurements are taken of the dead-banded parameters and compared with the current reference values. If the user-defined dead-band value is exceeded, the deviation is captured as an analog event and made available, via SCADA, either as a solicited or unsolicited analog event report. The reference value is then reset to the new reported value. The reference value is also updated after a Class 0 poll or a switching event. In the latter case, all updated voltages and currents are reported.

Harmonic Smoothing

Sensor-powered switch controls operating on feeders with very high harmonic content can exhibit fluctuations in voltage and phase angle readings. Harmonic smoothing is a user-activated function that helps to even out these readings.

New Features That Apply Only to PADD2S0X 2.38

  • Independent sectionalizing for switches — Sectionalizing can be enabled independently for Switch 1 and Switch 2. Binary input points now report sectionalizing enable status for each switch.
  • Logs expanded to include kW and kVA totals.

Downloading the New Software

If you currently own any S&C 5800 Series controls (without IntelliTEAM II) and you have an account on the S&C Automation Information Center, you can download the new software.

If you would like to set up a new S&C Automation Information Center account or would like a demonstration of the new software, please contact your S&C Sales Office.
