New York Culinary Institute is One of the First to Choose PMX™ Switchgear.
Turtle and Hughes, an S&C authorized distributor, was asked to prepare a quotation for S&C’s System II Modular Metal-Enclosed Switchgear. The end user, a Culinary Institute in Hyde Park, New York, was working with a contractor, whom they had awarded a design and build contract. The contractor had solicited quotations, not only from S&C, but from several of S&C’s competitors.
The contractor had a tight budget, so after reviewing all the quotations, the contractor contacted S&C and asked if it would be possible to reduce the cost of the System II switchgear.
Around this time, Turtle and Hughes attended the recent IEEE show, and viewed S&C’s new product, PMX™ Modular Metal-Enclosed Switchgear.
With ratings of 13.8 kV and 25 kV, S&C’s PMX Switchgear combines the solid features of S&C System II Modular Metal-Enclosed Switchgear with the size and economic benefits of S&C Pad-Mounted Gear. The pre-engineered modules are easily joined together to create switchgear assemblies suiting a wide variety of applications.
Each module is designed to withstand the rigorous standards of ANSI C37.20.3, as required of all metal-enclosed interrupter switchgear. This capability, combined with low-profile and compact size, allows PMX Switchgear to be installed in areas accessible to public without special site considerations.
Turtle and Hughes immediately saw the possibilities that S&C’s new PMX Switchgear offered in the areas of price and flexibility. They submitted a revised quotation to the Culinary Institute, featuring PMX — equipped with the exclusive enhanced fuse handling option — an option not available on any other switchgear, including the previously quoted System II.
When the Enhanced Fuse Handling option is specified, modules with fuses can be furnished with an adaptation of S&C’s patented TransFuser™ Mountings. PMX comes standard with a mechanical interlock that prevents the enclosure door from being opened when the switch is closed, where contact with the live components of the switchgear is a possibility. However, with the Enhanced Fuse Handling option, the fuses are completely enclosed in an internal compartment for enhanced safety. A unique fuse handling mechanism allows easy movement of fuses to the open, de-energized position for ready access and provides protection from inadvertent contact with energized parts during re-fusing. As an option, a fuse refill container can be added to provide convenient storage inside the module so restoration service is quick and operator safety is enhanced.

Operations personnel from the Culinary Institute carefully reviewed the literature on the PMX gear and the enhanced fuse handling option.
After a lengthy review, it was the improved safety aspects of the enhanced fuse handling option that ultimately captivated the operations personnel and caused them to choose S&C’s offering.
A short while later, S&C received an order from the Culinary Institute for Metal-Enclosed PMX Modular Design Switchgear, with enhanced fuse handling. The order has since been shipped and is awaiting installation.
