Introducing the 34.5-kV Fault Tamer® Fuse Limiter.

S&C is pleased to announce the availability of a new 34.5-kV Fault Tamer Fuse Limiter to round out the Fault Tamer product line. This new model was developed in response to requests for a two-component fusing system for use at 34.5 kV, having the energy-limitation and power quality advantages of conventional current-limiting fuses — but with the additional features and benefits inherent to Fault Tamer. Such benefits include retrofittability, ease of installation and removal, and no expelled parts. The new 34.5-kV Fault Tamer fits these requirements to a tee.

The 34.5-kV Fault Tamer features both a new backup limiter and a new series fuse tube, installed in a Catalog Number 89823R10 Type XS Fuse Cutout Mounting. This is the mounting used in the Catalog Number 89053R10 Type XS Fuse Cutout, rated 25 kV nominal, 150 kV BIL, and having a 26 inch (660 mm) leakage distance to ground.

The backup limiter has the same size and shape as the 25-kV backup limiter, but contains an additional length of ribbon element as required to successfully clear faults on 34.5-kV systems. The molded cover prominently identifies the 38-kV maximum voltage rating of the 34.5-kV backup limiter, to help ensure the device is properly applied.

The new 34.5-kV series fuse tube design represents a major departure from the fuse tubes used on 15-kV and 25-kV Fault Tamers. Instead of an engineered plastic molding, the new fuse tube utilizes the same MultiWind™ material as in Type XS Fuse Cutout fuse tubes. This material is stronger, has equivalent or better arc-interrupting properties, and is less expensive than the molded fuse-tube material.

The continuous-current rating of the 34.5-kV Fault Tamer is 15 amperes, as compared to the 20-ampere continuous-current rating for both 15-kV and 25-kV models. The 34.5-kV Fault Tamer can protect a wide range of overhead distribution transformers rated through 167 kVA single phase and 500 kVA three phase.

34.5-kV Fault Tamer Fuse Limiters use the same fuse cartridges as 15-kV and 25-kV Fault Tamers.

For utilities with single-phase loads on solidly-grounded multi-grounded 34.5-kV systems, a special Fault Tamer Fuse Limiter has been developed. This model consists of the new 34.5-kV backup limiter described above, plus a new 25-kV fuse tube. It’s designed to fit into a Catalog Number 89802R10 Type XS Fuse Cutout Mounting. This is the mounting used in Catalog Number 89042R10 and 89052R10 Type XS Fuse Cutouts, rated 25 kV nominal, 150 kV BIL, and having a 17-inch (432 mm) leakage distance to ground.
