Trans-Rupter II® Model EX: An Important Part of a Major Power Generation Expansion Project.
After going nearly 20 years without any significant expansion in electric generation, a large utility in Northern Utah recently installed five 138-kV Trans-Rupter II® Transformer Protector Model EX units at a facility containing five new 40-megawatt gas-turbine ‘peaker’ plants.
Each gas-turbine generation plant can be brought online or offline individually, allowing increased generation during ‘peak’ periods, and allowing the plant to be turned off during periods of low demand. In the pictured generation facility there are five turbines, thus requiring five individual transformers and five Trans-Rupter IIs. In this generation substation application, each Model EX, using a differential relay scheme, is protecting the 45/60/75 MVA step-up transformer and associated generation-side buswork and switchgear.
The utility installed five generation plants on eleven acres of land . . . each with its own transformer and switchgear. Trans-Rupter II’s lightweight, compact design was ideal, and the simple installation procedure was a significant benefit given the utility’s tight construction schedule. The S&C-supplied mounting pedestals come with pre-wired conduit, so installation was fast and easy.
The utility is satisfied with the performance of the Trans-Rupter II in this application, and very satisfied to have five new, efficient gas turbine plants . . . enough power to supply energy to nearly 160,000 homes!
