S&C’s Power Systems Services Division Wins Generation Related Turnkey Project.
S&C Electric Company’s Power Systems Services Division was recently awarded a significant turnkey substation project associated with construction of an Independent Power Producer (IPP) plant in the Southwest.
The utility was faced with a significant expansion effort at one of its 345/138kv transmission substations due to construction of a large IPP Power Plant. In order to handle the new power flows, the installation of a new 345/138kv transformer is required. Associated work includes installation of new 345 kV breakers, bus, bus supports, 138 kV breakers and associated disconnects and other equipment. The upgrade also requires a significant rearrangement of the 345 kV bulk-power feeds into the station as well as upgrades and rearrangement of associated protective relays.
S&C has been assigned the task of completely engineering this extensive substation upgrade as well as providing full construction services to implement the new design. S&C will also be responsible for all system commissioning and testing on the transformer, breakers and relay systems.
This project represents a new wave in the industry — new substations and facilities upgrades required by the installation of third-party generation on utility systems. Significant new generation requires extensive system studies to evaluate the impact of new load-flows as well as the impact upon system stability. In most cases, changes will be required to the surrounding utility systems to accommodate the new source of power.
S&C specializes in the interconnect studies required to evaluate the impact of new generation. And, S&C has the resources you need to implement the changes caused by the influx of generation into today’s electric utility systems. Call S&C today to find out how we can help you integrate generation into your system.
