A Flexible Solution for Mobile Substations: Trans-Rupter II® Transformer Protector.

Trans-Rupter II Transformer Protector

A western utility recently installed a Trans-Rupter II in a 138-kV mobile-substation application. The utility needed to transport the mobile under a land bridge with tight clearances, so the trailer could be no more than 14 feet high. Conventional circuit breakers didn’t meet the height requirement, and it would be impractical to remove such a device for transport.

Trans-Rupter II Transformer Protector provided an innovative solution for the utility’s needs. To meet the required height clearances, the utility removes the Trans-Rupter II pole-units for shipment. With its lightweight, compact design, Trans-Rupter II pole-units can be easily detached for transport. The pole-units are electrically linked, eliminating the need to remove or install a heavy mechanical interphase linkage. And the 138-kV pole-units weigh just 220 lbs. each, minimizing the installation equipment required. Pole-unit installation is simple as well: Mounting bosses on each pole-unit base simply need to be attached to mounting brackets on the trailer. In this application, plug-in connectors were used to wire the pole-units to relays and control power, so it’s a quick and easy task to make these connections after transport.

Trans-Rupter II’s mounting flexibility allowed the pole-units to be mounted in a triangular arrangement, providing increased phase spacing in a reduced area. And with its 31.5-kA fault-interrupting rating and full compatibility with virtually any relay systems, Trans-Rupter II provides reliable transformer protection as well.

A wide variety of space-saving mounting arrangements can be developed for Trans-Rupter II. To learn how Trans-Rupter II can provide special benefits for your mobile substation, contact S&C.
