Large Utility in Southeast U.S. Awards Power Systems Services a Major Transmission-Engineering Project

To meet the growing needs of their customers, a large Southeastern utility was forced to upgrade their existing 100-kV transmission lines from a single-circuit to a double-circuit configuration. The utility called on S&C to develop a plan and profile for the transmission line, comprised of 160 towers spanning over 16 miles of rough terrain.

S&C’s team of experts conducted a complete site walk-down to collect information on geographical limitations and prohibitive zones. During the site visit, S&C verified and corrected customer-provided survey data and physically measured all pertinent clearances. S&C methodically entered raw data from the survey — including data from the pole and conductor manufacturers — into PLS-CADD™, a transmission-engineering software package. Through the use of the software, S&C can design the most economical layout of all direct-buried poles and lattice towers, taking into consideration all structural, geographic, zoning, and customer-design constraints.

A complete design book consisting of a plan and profile, bills of material, drawings, assemblies and site photos will be submitted to the customer. The design book will be used to support the application for right-of-way encroachment permits and the customer’s bid process for construction work. Once the site has been staked, S&C will follow up to approve adherence to design criteria.
