S&C’s Power Systems Services Seminar:

VAR Management and Voltage Support for Distribution Systems

Deregulation of utilities and the associated loss of generation assets have imposed several new challenges for utility distribution companies. One of these challenges involves the effective use of VAR compensation technologies for effective voltage and VAR control while maximizing asset utilization in distribution systems. This 1-day seminar will provide an overview of the economic benefits of an effective VAR management program and will include in-depth discussion of various aspects thereof, including:

  • distribution system operating requirements under normal and contingency conditions
  • comparison of the benefits and/or disadvantages of substation versus distribution pole-top or pad-mount capacitor banks
  • optimal placement of distribution capacitor banks
  • manual, local and centralized automatic control of distribution capacitor banks
  • load tap changer (LTC) transformers and line regulators
  • integrated control of VAR Management devices.

Who Should Attend

Utility transmission and distribution engineers, consultants, and other personnel involved in VAR management activities.

Credit for Professional Development Instruction

Upon completion of the seminar, participants will earn 0.8 CEU credits.

Instructors

Ernst Camm

Ernst Camm is a Senior Engineer in S&C Electric Company’s Power Systems Services Division. Mr. Camm has experience in plant engineering, medium and high-voltage switch product application, and various types of analytical studies for utilities and end users. He has extensive experience in the analysis of capacitor-switching transients and their impact on adjustable-speed drives, harmonics, and the application of custom power devices for mitigating power quality problems. Ernst serves on various IEEE Working Groups and Task Forces on capacitor standards, harmonics, power system dynamic performance, and modeling of wind power plants and power system transients.
