Circuit-Isolator II™ Disconnect

Circuit-Isolator II™ Disconnect

S&C’s Circuit-Isolator II Disconnect provides three-pole, group-operated, visible-air-gap isolation in distribution substations. The Circuit-Isolator II can be used to interrupt low-level charging currents associated with substation buswork and circuit-breaker bushings, as well as other low-voltage currents commonly present in substations. It’s ideally suited for use with S&C Trans-Rupter II® Transformer Protector and S&C Type SMD® Power Fuses.

Circuit-Isolator II is available in ratings from 69 through 138 kV, in 1200-, 1600-, and 2000-ampere versions. Side-break, vertical-break, center-break, and double-break styles can be furnished, to suit almost any substation layout. All are designed for upright mounting . . . and S&C Mounting Pedestals are available.

Features

Features and Benefits

  • Based on robust contact and blade design of Mark V, Mark VI, and Series 2000 Circuit-Switchers. And S&C Alduti-Rupter Switches.
  • Ideal for isolating transformers, circuit breakers, and other substation equipment for repair and maintenance.
  • Can be used in sectionalizing schemes when power operated by a Type DS-1 Switch Operator.
  • Each disconnect is factory-assembled and adjusted for easy installation.
  • Can be custom engineered for mounting on almost any customer-supplied structure.

Construction

Circuit-Isolator II features aluminum blades (copper for models rated 2000 ampere continuous) with silver-inlaid, hot-tin-dipped (except over silver inlay), high-conductivity cast-copper tongue contacts. The jaw contacts are of multi-finger, spring-loaded, silver-inlaid, hard-drawn copper reverse-loop construction-to grip firmly against the tongue contact. The built-in blade-wiping action ensures a clean current-carrying surface and low-resistance current path.

The Circuit-Isolator II includes arcing horns. All arcing associated with charging and magnetizing currents is confined to the arcing horns to prevent pitting and erosion of the current-carrying contacts. It also includes all necessary station post insulators, vertical and horizontal operating pipe, pipe couplings and gearing necessary for installation.

A manual handle is also provided standard. Circuit-Isolator II alternately can be furnished with a manual geared operating handle or Type DS-1 Switch Operator.

Other Options Include:

  • Pre-Assembly — All insulators are pre-assembled to the disconnect base. Saving installation time.
  • Grounding Switch — 20 000 or 42 000 ampere grounding switch available for hinge-end of disconnect.
  • Key Interlocks — For coordination with grounding switch.
  • Auxiliary Contacts — Coupled to either the disconnect vertical operating pipe or the grounding switch; auxiliary contacts allow the switch position to be monitored remotely.

Type DS-1 Switch Operator

Type DS-1 Switch Operator

The Type DS-1 Switch Operator is an economical, low-speed operator designed for use with the Circuit-Isolator II Disconnect. It is also suitable for use with disconnects of other manufacture.

An electric motor drives a geared torque-transfer system, opening and closing the disconnect in approximately six seconds. The Type DS-1 Switch Operator includes a mechanical decoupling feature which allows the operator to be exercised while the disconnect remains in the open or closed position-permitting operational checkout of the control scheme without affecting the load. A removable manual operating handle is included for manual operation in case control power is lost.

The Type DS-1 Switch Operator is furnished with a weather-proof, dustproof, painted mild-steel enclosure as standard, but can be optionally specified with an aluminum or stainless-steel enclosure for use in coastal or harsh environments. A space heater is furnished as standard.

The Type DS-1 Switch Operator includes four adjustable auxiliary contacts which follow the position of the vertical operating pipe.

Optional Features Include:

  • Key interlocks — locks disconnect open and disconnects motor control.
  • Aluminum or Stainless Steel enclosure.
  • Operation counter.
  • Local-Remote blocking switch.
  • Auxiliary contacts. Up to ten auxiliary contacts for use in remote monitoring and operation of the disconnect.
