Fuse Handling

Opening and Closing Fuse Units

SMD Fuse Units are easily opened or closed using a universal pole equipped with the appropriate S&C Handling Tool — an S&C Distribution Prong or S&C Station Prong. During closing, the fuse unit is restrained from tilting in the hinge by trunnions and cams on the fuse unit lower end fitting. This action is self-guiding, so the fuse can be closed from nearly any angle.

SMD-1A, -2B, -2C, and -3 Power Fuses must not be opened under load. SMD-50 Power Fuses are equipped with arcing horns that permit switching of transformer magnetizing current only.

Installing or Removing Fuse Units

Fuse units can be installed in or removed from most SMD Power Fuse mountings using a universal pole equipped with an S&C Distribution Prong, Small Round Socket, or Large Round Socket. The S&C Fuse Hoist can be used on fuse mountings equipped with optional fuse-hoist hook.
