PureWave UPS for Sun MD

PureWave UPS™ for Sun Modular Data Center S20

The rapid growth of data center electrical loads has left many companies with the need to immediately expand their capacity. This entails not only expanding the data center equipment, but also expanding the air conditioning, UPS, and standby power. In many cases, new construction may be required.

Sun Modular Data Center S20 is a concept developed by Sun Microsystems, Inc. and was developed out of a need in the data center industry for rapid capacity expansion. It’s a flexible, pre-engineered data center in a portable standalone enclosure. Connect a UPS, generator, automatic transfer switch, and chilled water using the inputs provided, and the Sun MD can provide the extra computing capability needed in a shorter time frame than with a traditional brick-and-mortar approach. These external “building blocks” — chillers, standby generator, automatic transfer switch, and UPS system — can turn any parking lot, warehouse, or field location into a fully functional, mobile data center.

Special PureWave UPS Developed

In cooperation with Sun Microsystems, S&C has developed a special modular UPS design for Sun MD applications. It includes a large-capacity UPS system and the required switchgear to minimize facility wiring, providing seamless and reliable backup power for a Sun MD system — all in a single pad-mounted enclosure. Connect the facility and genset power to the PureWave UPS, connect the power output from the PureWave UPS to the Sun MD and A/C chiller, and the installation is complete.

The PureWave UPS for the Sun MD ships in a single enclosure. It can be skid-mounted for fast shipment, with minimal assembly at the job site.
