S&C is different from most other companies. It is a specialist and technical leader in an important, fast-changing industry. It is privately owned and committed to staying that way. Its employees are loyal, proud, and diverse, and its facilities are top-notch.

S&C is a performance-oriented workplace where employees are considered full partners in the company's success. Employee-idea programs bring thousands of suggestions about how to improve the business, and engineering teams continue to invent new devices and methods. S&Cers currently hold more than 300 patents. In the last 10 years, they have developed revolutionary products that are changing the electric power industry.

S&C is a company where many employees stay for a long time because they like what they are doing, who they are working with, and where they are going in their careers. It is a small company compared to some of its multinational competitors, but remains a leader in its industry because of innovative products and superior responsiveness to customer needs.

Co-founded in 1911 by Nicholas J. Conrad, the father of the late S&C chairman, John Conrad, S&C has always been family oriented. Generous benefits, including tuition reimbursement opportunities and one-week-plus of paid time off during the year-end holiday season, are among the factors that keep employees satisfied in their jobs. More than 350 people have been “S&Cers” for 25 years or more and are members of the “Quarter Century Club.”

S&C sponsors sports leagues from on-site volleyball to basketball and golf. All employees and hundreds of retirees receive the monthly employee magazine Volts &Jolts, which includes company news and employee pictures and profiles. Employees also receive Inside S&C, which provides extensive information on S&C’s business and financial performance.

Friendships are part of the S&C culture. Drawing employees from the extremely diverse Chicago metropolitan area, the company provides a comfortable environment for people from many nationalities and traditions. Every week somewhere in the company, a cake is being cut or a plaque being presented for someone’s birthday, retirement, or special achievement.
